1. LICENSE AGREEMENT AND TERMS OF WARRANTY
───────────────────────────────────────────
1. American Telephone and Telegraph Company ("AT&T") agrees to
grant you a non-exclusive license to use the EasyLink (r)
Partner program (hereinafter referred to as "Program")
subject to the terms set forth in this License Agreement.
2. The Program, its documentation and manual are copyrighted to
AT&T as noted in the manual and documentation.
3. The Program is designed to operate on the standard IBM PC
with the PC-DOS operating system. The Program is not
warranted to operate on future releases of PC-DOS nor is it
warranted to operate on all computers claiming IBM PC
compatibility.
4. You agree you will not export or reexport any Program or
copies thereof, except as specifically authorized in writing
by AT&T and, if required, the U.S. Department of Commerce in
accordance with the requirements of U.S. Export Administra-
tion regulations. This obligation shall survive termination
of this license.
5. AT&T MAKES NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED AND
SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTY OF MECHANTABILITY OR
FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AS TO THE PROGRAM PROVIDED
TO YOU BY AT&T.
6. NEITHER AT&T NOR ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE
CREATION, PRODUCTION OR DELIVERY OF THE PROGRAM SHALL BE HELD
LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES
CAUSED BY THE USE OF THE PROGRAM OR DOCUMENTATION.
7. Breaking the seal of this package or your use of the Program
acknowledges that you have read this Agreement and agree to
its terms, which are the only terms agreed upon between you
and AT&T for the Program.

2. OBTAINING UPGRADES
──────────────────────
Since EasyLink Partner is free software, and users are encouraged
to freely copy and distribute the program, we have no accurate way
to know who uses EasyLink Partner. This makes it rather difficult
to inform users of available upgrades to the software; upgrades
which you might find very useful.
To help alleviate this problem, we ask that you send a message to
EasyLink Number (ELN) 62654960, to the attention of "EasyLink
Partner Users". Please include your name, title, company name,
EasyLink Number, and the version of EasyLink Partner that you are
using. We would also appreciate your phone number and fax number,
but they are optional.
When a new release of EasyLink Partner becomes available, we'll
drop you a note (in your EasyLink mailbox) to let you know about
it. Please note that the ELN above is a collect number, so you
won't have to pay for your registration message.

3. FILE DESCRIPTIONS
─────────────────────
ESL.EXE - The main EasyLink Partner program.
INSTALL.EXE - The main installation program. It creates the
script and batch files that link EasyLink Partner
to your communications program.
NETINST.EXE - The network installation program. It creates
individual user subdirectories, scripts, and batch
files to allow multi-user operation.
MANUAL.DOC - This documentation file.
README.1ST - This file contains a listing of new features in
1.1, as well as some information to get you
started with EasyLink Partner.

4. SOFTWARE CONVENTIONS
────────────────────────
Help - The bottom line of the screen always contains information
relevant to your current operation.
Menus - All menus in EasyLink Partner allow you to select an
option using either of two methods: use the up and down
arrows to highlight your selection and press [Enter], or
simply press the highlighted letter of the option you
desire.
User-input fields - Fields which are used to prompt you for input
have a number of editing features available.
You may use the left and right arrow keys, the
Ctrl-Right-Arrow and Ctrl-Left-Arrow keys, and
the [Home] and [End] keys to move around
within the field, and the [Delete] and
[BackSpace] keys to edit. If you are presented
with a default in a field, you may accept it
by pressing [Enter], or you may simply start
entering new information and the default will
automatically be removed. If you would like to
edit the default, press any cursor movement or
editing key prior to entering new information.
Multi-field windows - When entering information into multiple
fields within a window, use [Tab] or
[Enter] to move from field-to-field. Press
[F10] to accept all of the information you
have specified, or [ESC] to abort the
operation.
Filename prompts - When prompted for a filename, you have the
option of specifying the exact file you would
like, or entering a DOS wildcard filename and
pressing [Enter] and then picking from a list
of matching files. As an alternative to
specifying a DOS wildcard filename, you may
simply enter a valid path (and drive if
necessary) and press [Enter]. Doing so implies
an '*.*' after the path.

5. INSTALLATION
────────────────
Before installing EasyLink Partner, make sure you have already
installed your communications software. Also, for all the
supported software packages but Crosstalk XVI, you must create an
entry for EasyLink in the program's dialing directory.
1. Place the EasyLink Partner diskette in a floppy drive and run
the program INSTALL.EXE.
2. Read the information that appears, and then press [Enter] to
continue.
3. A menu will appear, prompting you to select the
communications software package you have.

Enter the requested information, where appropriate, as
follows:
Path to install EasyLink Partner to
───────────────────────────────────
Enter a drive and directory path where you would like to
have EasyLink Partner installed. You must specify a
valid drive, but the specified subdirectory need not
exist; the install program will create it for you.
Example: C:\EP.
Note: If you use Bitcom, you will not see this field.
This is because a limitation in Bitcom requires
that EasyLink Partner be installed in the same
directory as Bitcom. The install program will do
this automatically, based on the information you
enter in the next field.
Path to Comm Program
────────────────────
Enter the drive and directory path where your
communications package resides. Example: C:\PROCOMM.
Dialing Directory Number
────────────────────────
Enter the number of the dialing directory entry you
setup to communicate with EasyLink. Example: 10.
Dialing Directory Entry Name
────────────────────────────
Enter the name of the dialing directory entry you setup
to communicate with EasyLink. Example: EASYLINK.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EasyLink Partner 1.1 User's Guide 7
EasyLink Access Number
──────────────────────
Enter the phone number you will use to access EasyLink.
If you must dial a number to get an "outside" line,
include it here. If you need to pause between dialing
different parts of the phone number, use the pause
commands that your modem understands. Example: 9,608-
7480.
Modem Baud Rate
───────────────
Select the baud rate you would like to use when
communicating with EasyLink. Usually, this will be the
highest rate your modem supports, up to 2400 bps.
Modem COM Port
──────────────
Select the COM port which your modem is connected to
(external modems) or is setup as (internal modems).
Terminal Type Code
──────────────────
The terminal type code you specify here will determine
certain characteristics (such as full or half duplex)
that EasyLink will have during a communications session.
Normally, the default code of 35 should be used.
EasyLink ID
───────────
Enter your EasyLink ID. This is part of your signon
information. Example: EID123456
EasyLink Username
─────────────────
Enter your EasyLink Username. This is part of your
signon information. Example: MYUSER.
EasyLink Password
─────────────────
Enter your EasyLink Password. This is part of your
signon information. Example: MYPASS.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EasyLink Partner 1.1 User's Guide 8
Default Message File Path (optional)
─────────────────────────
When EasyLink Partner prompts you for a message text
filename it assumes your files are in the current
directory. If you would like EasyLink Partner to
automatically look in a different drive and/or
directory, enter it here. You may change this path any
time you wish, via Setup within EasyLink Partner.
Example: C:\MYFILES.
External Word Processor Command (optional)
───────────────────────────────
EasyLink Partner has a built-in word processor that will
suit most messaging needs. However, if you would like to
use your own word processor to create/modify message
files, you may enter the drive, path, and program
filename here. Example: C:\WP51\WP.EXE.
External Word Processor Command Line (optional)
────────────────────────────────────
The External Word Processor Command, above, specifies
what program to run when you select a word processor.
This field specifies the command line parameters to be
used when the external word processing program is run.
Typically, all you need to put on the command line is
the name of the message text file that you selected.
Since this filename changes for each message you create,
a "replacement variable" is provided that EasyLink
Partner will replace with the actual name of the message
file. The replacement variable is "%f". Example: %f.
Press F10 when you are satisfied with the information you
have entered.
5. Install will now create all of the necessary script and batch
files to link EasyLink Partner with your communication
software. After reading the window of information that
appears, press any key to continue.
6. INSTALL will now ask if you want to run NETINST.

will appear here, followed by "*.*". You may select a file
in one of three ways:
1. Just type the filename in. Doing so will remove the
default message file path, so you need to include the
drive and path with the filename if they're different
than the current drive and directory.
2. Backspace over the "*.*" and enter the filename you
want. This preserves the default path.

The file list will be sorted alphabetically. To select,
simply use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate
file and press [Enter]. Alternatively, start typing the
name of the file you are looking for. As you type each
letter, the highlight bar will move to the first
matching filename. Once you are in the vicinity of the
file you are looking for, you can use the arrow keys.
Note that you may change to other directories on the
same drive by highlighting the directory name and
pressing [Enter]. Also note that EasyLink Partner
doesn't support sending binary files, so .EXE, .COM, and
.SYS files are automatically excluded from the file
list.
If you selected "Word Processor", the selected file will be
loaded into the built-in word processor (or your own word
processor, if you have setup EasyLink Partner to use it. See
section 7.d., Setup) for you to edit it. Once in the word
processor, press F1 for a list of valid commands, or see
Appendix B. The built-in word processor uses WordStar
commands. Once you are done creating/editing the message
text, save it and exit using <CtrlK>-<X>. If you are using
your own word processor, be sure to save the message text in
ASCII format.
You will now be prompted for the type of address you would
like to send the message to.

"Send all" will do just that. It will create a file that
contains all of the addresses and corresponding message text,
and then send it via your communications software.
"Just create message file" will only do the first part of
"Send all"; namely the creation of the message file. You
would use this option if you wanted to create the message
file, but not send it to EasyLink. Note that the generated
file will be overwritten the next time you go through the
message creation process.
If for some reason you do not want to send the messages you
have created, select "Abort all". This will erase all of the
addresses you have entered, but will leave your message text
files untouched.
Normally, you will select "Send all" and EasyLink Partner
will send all of your messages via your communications
software.
Retrieve Mailbox Messages
─────────────────────────
When you select "Retrieve mailbox messages" from the Instant
Mail Service menu, one of two things will happen. If
previously retrieved mail exists on your disk, you will see
the following menu.

Otherwise, EasyLink Partner will immediately retrieve your
mail from EasyLink using your communications software.
If you get the menu, you have the option of viewing,
printing, or deleting previously received mail, as well as
retrieving new mail from your EasyLink mailbox.
Whether or not you see this menu before you retrieve your
mail, when you return from getting your mail, you will always
see the menu.
When viewing your mail, you may use the following keys to
move around the file:
Up-arrow Moves up one line
Down-arrow Moves down one line
PgUp Moves up 21 lines
PgDn Moves down 21 lines
Home Moves to the top of the file
End Moves to the end of the file
Left-arrow Scrolls horizontally left one
character
Right-arrow Scrolls horizontally right one
character
Ctrl-Left-arrow Scrolls horizontally left 5
characters
Ctrl-Right-arrow Scrolls horizontally right 5
characters
The file viewer will display upto the first 132 characters of
a line (you'll have to scroll horizontally to see past the
77th character). If your received mail contains lines longer
than 132 characters, they will be preserved in the file, but
you won't be able to view the full line within EasyLink
Partner.
Note that all received mail is appended to your old mail
file, if it exists. This means that if you never delete your
mail, the mail file will get very large. When you print your
mail, the ENTIRE mail file is printed.
Terminal Mode
─────────────
If you select "Terminal mode" from the Instant Mail Service
menu, EasyLink Partner will immediately connect you to
EasyLink and signon for you, via your communication software.
You may then perform any online functions you desire. When
you are done with your online session, exit your
communication package; you will immediately return to
EasyLink Partner.

Resend Last Batch
─────────────────
Selecting "Resend last batch" from the Instant Mail Service
menu allows you to resend the last set of messages that you
created and sent, or attempted to send. This is useful for
those times when an error occurs within your communications
package, and your messages don't get sent.
If there are no previous messages to be sent, this menu
option will not appear.

C. Information Services
────────────────────────
As indicated on the EasyLink Services menu, EasyLink Partner
also provides access to AT&T's information services; FYI
News, Infomaster Databases, Directory Information Service,
and the Official Airline Guide.
Since each service provides multiple services which require
user selection, EasyLink Partner simply takes care of the
dialing and signon process, and leaves you at the information
service prompt for the particular service you have selected.
Once you have completed your session with the service, exit
your communication software and you will automatically return
to EasyLink Partner.

If you select "Video display speed", you will see one of two
windows. If you have other than a CGA video card and monitor
you will see a message that states you don't need to change
anything.

On the other hand, if you do have a CGA display, you will be
given the ability to tell EasyLink Partner whether or not to
do "snow checking". This relates to problems that original
CGA displays had with writing directly to video memory. By
default, EasyLink Partner will do snow-checking on CGA
displays. However, if you select "fast" display mode,
EasyLink Partner won't do so, and will display data on the
screen as fast as possible.

APPENDIX A. - THE DATA VALIDATION "HOOK"
────────────────────────────────────────
EasyLink Partner contains a programming "hook" that allows you to
add an external program to validate information entered by a user
in an addressing window. For instance, you might want to make
sure that users are entering valid departmental billing codes when
addressing their messages.
Specifically, if a validation module is present, when a user
presses [F10] to accept data entered in an addressing window, a
small specially-named file will be created with the entered data,
and the validation program will be executed. The validation
program can then examine the data in the file. If the data is
acceptable, the validation program should halt with a DOS exit
code of 0. If the data is not acceptable, the validation program
should halt with a DOS exit code equal to the field number of the
invalid data. EasyLink Partner will then place the user on the
field of bad information.
An alternative use for this programming hook is to maintain a
database of messaging information by substituting a database
program for the validation program.
The following points apply to the validation program:
1. The validation program must reside in a subdirectory
named "VALIDATE" under the directory in which EasyLink
Partner is installed. For example, if EasyLink Partner
is installed in C:\EP, then the validation program must
reside in C:\EP\VALIDATE.
2. EasyLink Partner will recognize any of the following as
the validation program:
VALIDATE.BAT
VALIDATE.COM
VALIDATE.EXE
Do not place more than one of the above named files in
the VALIDATE subdirectory.
3. The mere presence of a validation program file in a
VALIDATE subdirectory enables validation within EasyLink
Partner.
4. When the validation program is executed, the default
directory will be the VALIDATE subdirectory.
5. The validation program may freely change directories
during execution.
6. The validation program may display anything it would
like to on the screen; EasyLink Partner will restore the
original screen contents. In fact, since some delay
will be associated with the validation program, the
program should at least display a "Please wait.."
window, if not something more descriptive.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
EasyLink Partner 1.1 User's Guide 28
7. The validation program will find the data to validate in
a file named VALIDATE.ADR, located in the VALIDATE
subdirectory. The format of the data in the file depends
upon the type of address that was selected by the user.
See the data formats below. Note that the VALIDATE.ADR
file is overwritten each time the user presses F10 after
entering new addressing information.
8. If the validation program detects invalid information
entered in any field, it should halt execution and
return a DOS exit code equal to the field number. Upon
return from the validation program, EasyLink Partner
will position the cursor on the indicated field for
correction by the user. If you do not want EasyLink
Partner to position the user on any particular field
when invalid information is detected, return an exit
code of 255.
VALIDATE.ADR Data Formats
Below are the formats for the validation data file depending upon
address type. Each data field begins with a field identifier of
the form "[identifier]:" followed by a space and then the user-
entered data for that field (if any). Note that the [AddrType]
field is used to identify the type of address that the data
represents. Some fields will only contain either a "Y" or a "N"
to indicate whether or not the represented feature has been
enabled or not.
Opposite each field is it's field number. The field number should
be used as the DOS exit code if the data for that field is
invalid.
As shown, each data format begins with a [User]: field. Note that
a [User]: field is present only when EasyLink Partner has been
installed for multiuser use using NETINST.EXE (the network
installation program).
